Safety in the Kitchen

Hygiene Safety:
  • Always wash your hands before cooking
  • Tie long hair back
  • Wash vegetables to eradicate dirt, germs or pesticides
  • Use clean equipment
  • Cut vegetables before meats or change cutting boards to avoid contamination
  • Avoid cooking when sick
  • Make sure all cooking and preparation surfaces are completely clean

Preparation Safety:
  • Never use a blunt knife
  • Separate meats and vegetables
  • Use different boards for meats and vegetables
  • Always cut, grate or peel away from yourself and other people
Cooking Safety:
  • Always use oven mitts when removing food from the oven
  • Don't wear dangling jewellery because it could get caught on pot handles
  • Angle pot handles towards the back of stove to avoid collision with them
  • Never leave a gas oven on when moving out of the kitchen
  • Keep curtains away from stoves in case they catch on fire
  • Remove lids carefully to avoid steam burns
  • Continually stir boiling food to avoid spitting water
