Icing

Icing is one of the vital ingredients needed when decorating cakes, biscuits and other exciting desserts. There are many different types of icing that have different flavours, colours and consistency. Icing is used to complement the base sponge or biscuit with an electrifying surge of sweetness and to decorate them with different colours and patterns. Icing is by far one of the most vital components in sweet cookery and I'm going to share with you guys some easy icing recipes, as well as decorating ideas and tips.

My Simple Icing Recipe
Hey guys and girls, this is my very simple icing recipe I wanted to share. It is extremely easy and tastes especially beautiful on vanilla sponge cake.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup of icing sugar, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon of soft margarine or butter
  • 1 tablespoon of milk
Utensils:
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula
  • Sifter
  • Mixing Bowl
Method:
  1. Sift icing sugar into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Mix in butter with icing sugar until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the milk into the mixture until it becomes completely combined into preferred consistency.
  4. Colour the icing using food colouring and then apply to your cakes or biscuits.

Icing tips and ideas
  • To make a hard glaze like icing don't use butter, but just icing sugar (200g) and milk or water.
  • Use a flat icing knife to spread icing across cakes and biscuits.
  • Use piping bags to ice different shapes and patterns.
  • Try tinting and making shapes in the icing by mixing a tiny bit of food colouring with the already applied base colour.
  • Always, always, always sift the icing sugar.
